Just The Two Of Us

Real Talk. It’s kind of crazy how soon after Joel and I got married that we started getting all the “when are you going to have a baby” questions (I’m pretty sure we got a few of them at our wedding reception via my grandma who told us to “get to work” on it, haha). Okay, I guess it’s not that crazy because we all know that “first comes love, then comes marriage, then comes the baby in the baby carriage” and it’s not like we’re getting any younger…

I definitely had a strong case of baby fever last year. So much so that it was distracting me from my relationship with not only my husband, but with myself. I was obsessed with the idea of a miniature version of me and Joel, but when I actually stopped to think about how big of a deal it is to bring a human into the world and care for him/her, I felt overwhelmed. To make a really long story short, we’re not ready to add any tiny humans to our family just yet. AND THAT’S OKAY!

My favorite thing that I’ve learned from my husband is to pump the brakes and to take the time to enjoy the life you’re living as you live it, because change is inevitable. As of right now, that means reveling in our time with just the two of us (plus our two dumb kitties, whom we love like children anyway). Right now, we’re seriously enjoying loving other people’s kids (so many friends with cute babies to hold all around us!). We find sheer delight in being Aunt Sarah and Uncle Joel to our sweet niece, and can’t wait for another little niece or nephew to arrive soon; but we’re definitely not scrambling to add a new cousin to the mix at this time.

I’m not sure if it was society or my own biological clock tick tick ticking away, but I’ve definitely felt pressure to procreate. As soon as I had the epiphany to relieve that pressure, to just let it go, I found myself the happiest I’ve ever been. Although being a mom is something I, personally, feel destined to be, I’m now in no rush whatsoever. So sorry, Grandma, it’s just the two of us!

“I Married My Mother-In-Law”

If you’re reading this as either a married person or a person in a committed relationship, take a moment to think about your significant other’s family and your relationship with them. Do you get along? Does your father-in-law tease you like one of his own kids? Does your boyfriend’s younger brother annoy you? Do you share clothes with your future sister-in-law or do you kind of want to push her out of a moving vehicle? Do you have a “can’t live with ’em, can’t live without ’em” vibe with your in-laws? Do you feel like you compete with your mother-in-law for your husband’s attention? Are you glad you live thousands of miles away from your SO’s family or are you so grateful they’re down the street?

I picked up a 25 cent copy of  I Married My Mother-In-Law from a book sale at the end of last year because the whole concept is so interesting to me! The book is a collection of essays, from a multitude of different pretty well known writers, about relationships with in-laws. The stories vary from genuine love for in-laws to “I’m so glad they’re dead”.

Obviously, when reading the title of the book, I immediately started thinking about my in-laws and what I have to say about my own, personal relationship with them…

MIL3

Long story short: I HAVE THE BEST IN-LAWS. Seven years ago I met this great guy who I  ended up marrying. I had no idea back then, though, I’d be winning the in-law lottery! You don’t ever really expect to be friends with the mom and dad of the person you marry, but that’s what we are. Joel’s dad, Ron (aka Ron Boogie), is the coolest guy I know, and his mom, Sheila (aka Sheesh or SheShe), is one of my best friends.

How lucky am I that my mom-in-law is my own personal ray of sunshine? Sheila Blumer is not only beautiful on the outside, but she is the sweetest person I’ve ever met. She is one of those people who would give you the shirt off her own back. Literally. One time I complimented her shirt and she gave it to me a few days later, freshly laundered and folded, of course. Just last week I sent a “pity me” text to SheShe telling her how I slipped on ice because I don’t have any winter boots and she showed up two days later with three different pairs of boots for me to try on and keep. Her kindness knows no bounds!

I was the last person to marry into the Blumer family and sometimes I feel like I’m part of a really cool and exclusive club. Me, Joel, his sisters, and their husbands have this amazing example of what a partnership can be. Not saying Ron and Sheila are perfect, but with 45 years of marriage under their belts, they’re damn near close to it in my eyes and I’m going to keep them up on a pedestal where they belong.

Did you know that marrying for love is a relatively new thing? In the past, people used to get married for the sole purpose of making ties with other families and gaining in-laws. These days, I feel like in-laws are probably just “those people you have to see at Thanksgiving” for a lot of people, but not for me. I am so grateful to have fallen in love with Joel and with his family too.

On the flip side of things, I’m kind of shocked to see how well Joel gets along with all of his in-laws, my crazy family. I get my lack of eyelashes, love of stray animals, and many more of my quirks from my mama. He definitely married his mother-in-law. Lucky guy!

Girls Support Girls (In Business!)

There are few things I love more in life than solidarity amongst women. Nothing against dudes or anything, I’ve just always felt that sisterhood is such a powerful thing, ya know?

Another thing I love is supporting small businesses. So when I come across a small business that is founded, owned, or operated primarily by women, I want to spread the word! Scroll down for a few of my favorites and click to support these awesome women in business!!!

I’m bummed I’m missing the women’s march again this year, but I’ll be there in spirit (wearing my Girl Power shirt, too)!

It’s Only Natural: Deodorant

Deodorant is something we ALL (probably? I hope so, anyway) use everyday. And since the list seems to go on and on about why antiperspirants and aluminum filled deodorants are bad for you, I made the switch to the more natural stuff about 3 years ago. I’ve never used an antiperspirant because I don’t really sweat THAT much, but because I wear, you know, shirts everyday and the material rubs all up in my ‘pits, I tend to get pretty stinky if I don’t have on any deodorant. To give you an example of how smelly my underarms can get; last spring there was a sewage leak at work on a day I had skipped applying deodorant at all, and my first thought was “holy crap, is that me?!” C’est la vie, I guess?

IMG_9402

Of the 5 or so natural deodorants I’ve tried, most of them have sucked. For example, I bought this crystal stick to rub on my armpits and although I followed the directions given by real life users, I think it actually made me smell worse. And just imagine my disappointment when I bought this travel size Alba Botanica deodorant(one of my most trusted all natural brands) to take to Paris last year and it didn’t work at all. I ended up using my husbands deodorant for most of the trip because I’d probably have cartoonish green stink lines coming off of me, like Pepé le Pew, if I didn’t. I also tried this one, but it was kind of expensive and this one that worked well, but I had to reapply quite a few times throughout the day…

stinky2

It was a long, smelly process, but I finally found (IMHO) THE BEST all natural deodorant! I bought a stick of Schmidt’s from Target on a whim and I LOOOOOOVE IT! The only bad thing was applying this lime scented one right after shaving burned the living shit out of my armpits, but that’s what citrus will do to ya. I’ve since switched to the Rose + Vanilla scent and swear by its greatness! I keep a travel size one in my purse, in case of emergency, too.

IMG_9401

Am I getting old because something like finding an all natural deodorant that actually works is wildly exciting to me? Most likely! I can’t help it, I just want to shout “HEY EVERYBODY, COME SMELL HOW GOOD I SMELL” from the nearest rooftop, but probably won’t because that’s be weird, right?

IMG_8840

There’s nothing better than a successful pit check, am I right?! Bonus points if you don’t get any deodorant stains on a black shirt or dress.

BTW, this post is #NOTsponsored, but if anyone from the Schmidt’s team is reading this, I volunteer! I volunteer as spokeswoman!

Straight Trippin’ In 2018

Woahhhh, happy New Year! When I wrote this post about all of the places I wanted to visit in 2017, I didn’t expect to get to go to all of them, but I did and then some! It just goes to show that writing down your goals really does increase the odds of achieving them. So I’m going to repeat the process every year with the places I want to visit. Here are my 2018 travel agenda goals:

Austin, TX. I love Austin soooo much and usually make it a point to spend time in my home state’s capitol when I visit family in San Antonio, but didn’t get to last time I was in town. Luckily, I’ll have double the opportunity as my sister and brother are getting married (not to each other!) in January and February of 2018, respectively. I’m trying to convince my older sister and her BF to stay with Joel and I either here or here for one night after one of the weddings. Austin is kind of the epitome of cool. I mean, it’s a very blue city smack dab in the middle of a pretty red state making it the black sheep sibling of all the Texas cities. One of my favorites for sure.

Atlanta, GA. My sister-in-law, Rachie, lives in ATL and we got to go down for Thanksgiving back when I was just Joel’s awesome girlfriend (no ring yet!). We freaking love it there and since we’re expecting a new little niece or nephew in March, it’d be a great reason to go back!

Albuquerque, NM. If I didn’t include ABQ in this list, I’d probably get virtually bitch slapped by my bestie. We’ve been wanting to go to the hot air balloon festival for so long, and maybe 2018 will be the year we do it! Then again, she does live in El Paso and I wouldn’t mind a weekend road trip to Marfa (hint, hint, Allie!). We love the Southwest!

Morocco.  That very same aforementioned bestie of mine’s mama is getting married in June and since she is currently living and working in Fez, she’s having a Moroccan wedding. How freaking cool is that? Getting to see friends who are living in amazing cities has always been one of my favorite things to do! Who wouldn’t love a built-in, knowledgeable tour guide?!

Whether it’s a weekend trip or a week long vacation, I hope to travel in 2018 at least as much as we did last year. I definitely go stir crazy staying put in one place for too long.

So where do you wanna go this year??
