What To Wear To A Winter Wedding

IT’S WEDDING SEASON!!!

Well, it’s wedding “season” for us anyway. We have 3 to go to in a time span of about a month, and I’m soooo excited for all of them. I. LOVE. WEDDINGS. I’ve had my bridesmaid dress for wedding number 2 (my twin sister’s) for a while now and have been mentally planning what to wear to weddings 1 and 3 for way too long. Like I said, I’m excited!

Picking out what to wear isn’t rocket science, but sometimes it’s hard. If I don’t plan what I’m wearing to a specific event or outfits for a trip far enough in advance, I usually spend an hour or so staring at my closet screaming “I HAVE NOTHING TO WEAR” while crying ever-so-dramatically…

Even though the three weddings will be vastly different, I thought I’d give myself (and you, dearest readers!) some general guidelines of what to wear and what NOT to wear to a winter wedding.

How To Dress Yo-self Before You Wreck Yo-self: Winter Wedding Edition.

  • You can never go wrong with an all black ensemble. This skater dress with eyelash lace detailing is chic as hell. I can fit a box of leftovers in this black quilted bag. Add a pop of color with a jacket or shoes. Cool!
  • I’m always a fan of accessorizing with minimal gold jewelry and Madewell has some of the best I’ve seen.
  • Layer up! It was 22 degrees when we took these photos and the fact that I was wearing this bodysuit with tights under my dress was keeping me quite cozy. If I wear this dress to my little brother’s wedding in Texas in February, I’ll probably be able to skip the tights and bodysuit.
  • Take advantage of post Christmas sales!!! Joel got a new black suit on the day after Christmas for $71 at Nordstrom Rack.
  • If you’re a guy, don’t wear shorts. If you’re a gal, don’t wear white. Easy!
  • Ask yourself these questions before buying any garment for a wedding or big event: Can I dance in this? Can I easily pee in this (the bodysuit I’m wearing in these photos is, luckily, very easy to undo!)? Will this look okay in photos? Am I comfortable in this?
  • Keep in mind that if you’re a guest at a wedding, it is not your time to shine and it is not your day. Don’t be over the top and don’t worry too much about what you’re wearing.

See now, wasn’t that easy?

Note to self: Louboutins + Tights + Icy sidewalks are a recipe for disaster. WEAR YOUR KATE SPADE BOOTIES BEFORE YOU FALL AND DIE, YOU IDIOT.

Holidays Daze

And just like that, round 2 of the holiday season is over. IDK about you, but I am definitely feeling a Christmastime hangover because it comes and goes too quickly. We try to pack as much stuff as possible into a short amount of time and our heads are left spinning.

IMG_8977

This Christmas was different from the last five I’ve had with my Pittsburgh family, but we added some great new customs to complement the old. My sis-in-law + her husband (our family’s most loveable weirdo, Friggin’ Todd) usually come to town, but stayed in Nashville this year. And although I hate to miss an opportunity to hold the cutest baby in the world, our niece Lola; seeing her via FaceTime was so, so sweet. We usually get pretty dressed up for Christmas Eve dinner at my in-laws, but my new favorite tradition of drinking all night and dancing in the living room until 6 a.m. on the Eve of Christmas Eve meant showing up in yoga pants. I’m also 99% sure one of our new things to do every year is letting friends wear my hair extensions.

Another new tradition we’ll be honoring is going out for fancy hot chocolate. Millie’s Homemade Ice Cream makes the best. It’s so rich and decadent and will definitely make you sick if you drink it too fast or too much of it (oops!), but it’s somehow sooooooo worth it. This was the first time we’ve ever been to Millie’s that it wasn’t packed full of people, so we took some photos. Definitely put this on your list of places to go to in PGH if you haven’t been!

Anyway, happy belated birthday, Jesus! I’m feeling pretty hashtag blessed because I’m looking forward to going back to work tomorrow and we’re almost through the final round of the holiday season (NYE is Sunday). Happy ‘Daze!

Dressed To Match

Raise your hand if you can’t walk by a Where’s Waldo book without opening it up and finding that little dweeb on one of the pages. *enthusiastically raises hand*

Waldo is who I think of every time I blend in with my surroundings. Which is pretty stupid considering Waldo himself isn’t actually camouflage and sticks out like a sore thumb once you find him. I should probably rewrite this post, but I feel like I’ve come this far and I might as well keep going. Whatever. They can’t all be winners.

These photos of me dressed to match the building behind me were acquired by no coincidence whatsoever. I packed this b&w striped dress for Miami specifically to take photos in front of this specific b&w striped wall. Which kind of made me question all the things I do and why. I guess this is my own version of art? Sure! We’ll go with that answer.

Seriously though, if you’re in the market for a new and interesting Instagram account to follow, check out @DressedToMatch! It’s pretty much where I got the inspiration for this particular photoshoot. Taking photos of you matching art work is in itself a version of modern art! Cool!

Now if you’ll excuse me, there is a neon color park in town that is begging me to be seen with it…

24 Hours In Miami

Last weekend, Joel and I took a trip to Florida to celebrate my 28th birthday AND to visit some good friends who moved down south back in April. Although we were flying into Ft. Lauderdale and staying with our friends in Davie for most of the weekend, we couldn’t not go to Miami! Miami has been on my list of U.S. cities to see for quite some time (Wynwood Walls is basically every blogger’s version of the Holy Land) and I’m so glad we got a little break from the cold weather in Pittsburgh to soak up the sun and feast our eyes on the most colorful city I’ve ever been to.

When I was researching stuff to do in Miami for our trip, Art Basel kept popping up. “What the hell is this Art Basel thing everyone keeps mentioning” I thought to myself as I scrolled through my Pinterest search of “cool spots in Miami, FL”.  Basically, Art Basel is a lot like Austin’s South By Southwest, but instead of music all over the city, there’s art. It’s actually held word wide throughout the year, but Miami is the biggest one. There are tons of events going on throughout the week and there are SO. MANY. PEOPLE. I remember thinking it would be cool to see Art Basel someday (and get invited to some parties or gallery openings because I’d be such a popular blogger in this futuristic fantasy)… I did not realize that Art Basel would actually be wrapping up during our weekend in Florida, but I’m so glad we got to witness the craziness!

Bienvenido à Miami!

As a birthday gift, my friend Jess got us a room at Atton Brickell so we could stay in the city and not have to worry about driving back to Davie Saturday night. IT WAS AWESOME! They have a rooftop infinity pool that we had to ourselves because we were the only people not cold in 60 degrees, south Florida’s version of “winter”. I loved seeing Floridians in their fur coats and down jackets; it reminded me of my hometown of San Antonio where people freeze when it’s any temperature under 70.

During the year’s biggest art festival, Miami’s Art district was the place to be! We went to Wynwood to walk around, eat, drink, window shop, and look at the most beautiful street art in the world. It’s where we spent both Saturday night as well as Sunday morning and early afternoon. Did I pack a suitcase full of different outfits to change into throughout the day? WHAT DO YOU THINK?! I definitely changed clothes in the middle of the street where there were people spray painting 20 feet away too… Miami is not a city where you have to be shy, I actually saw a guy peeing in the street on Saturday night so I figured changing my top would be NBD. I hope there are some people who are looking at the photos in this post without reading anything because it’ll look like we were in Miami for a whole week and not just 24 hours.

We left Wynwood Sunday afternoon with the top down on our borrowed Saab convertible and headed to South Beach. What a gorgeous part of town!!!! I love the Art Deco hotels that line Ocean Drive and don’t even get me started on the eclectic lifeguard stands on the beach! All the heart eyes for this crazy colorful city.

There are a few things we did not get to do whilst in Miami; such as gawk at the modern architecture, hang out in Little Havana, or visit The Villa Casa Casuarina (aka The Versace Mansion). But it’s always good to leave a few things to come back to…

Party in the city where the heat is on. All night on the beach ’til the break of dawn. Can’t wait to see you again, Miami!

Beach, Please.

We all know that one Emerson quote (frequently used to caption Instagram posts) that says something about living in the sunshine, swimming in the sea, and drinking the wild air, riiiight? Although it was a quote ruined by basic bitches, it’s still a good one. There is something so purifying about being near the sea.

Right now it is 19 degrees in Pittsburgh and there is fresh snowfall on the ground. I am beyond grateful that I got to spend my birthday weekend visiting friends in sunny AF south Florida with my husband. I hope that the memories of the colorful lifeguard stands of South Beach and the crystal clear waters of Ft Lauderdale can carry me through the winter. At the very least, I have enough blog material to pretend like I’m somewhere sunny for the rest of the year…

Cats Vs Christmas Decor

IMG_8414

Joel and I are pretty much the epitome of “cat people”, but somehow when we adopted Peter and Dee last October, we got stuck with the most dog-like kittens I’ve ever met. Sweet Dee loves to play fetch with wrappers. Peter Nincompoop loves belly rubs and chasing his tail. Thank God they don’t have to be walked outside to poop or I’d contemplate a no refund return of these assholes (KIDDING, OBVIOUSLY, WE LOVE THEM WAY TOO MUCH!).

Last November, we put up our Christmas tree as a family of four and didn’t think much about what our children cats would do about it. The next morning, on my way to turn on the coffee pot, I screamed as I cut my foot on something. When I turned on the lights, I saw that our floor was littered with broken ornaments. Cool! A few days later, after getting into the habit of turning the lights on before going downstairs, I saw a trail made of tufts of fur leading all the way from the tree up the stairs and into the bathroom… It was the stuffed raccoon ornament my mother-in-law had given me the year before, torn to shreds by Peter. Lovely!

Somehow, these little dummies were smart enough to do all of their dirty work when we were either asleep or at work. We’d come home and they’d practically say “it wasn’t me” when there’d be cat sized gaps in the Christmas tree (cat translation: “meow meowwww meow”). The cycle continued until we put away our Christmas tree early, before New Year’s Day whereas it used to stay up until Valentine’s. Womp Womp.

“I’m gonna tear that shit up later” -Peter

They say the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. Well, call us crazy because we not only put up the tree with our old glass ornaments, but we surrounded the kitty house with lights as well- definitely a recipe for disaster (see also: the fate of the cat in Christmas Vacation). The only preventative measure we took this year has been leaving our little Yoda dressed as Santa ornament in a cabinet far far away because Peter Boy will eat him; that and we now have a spray bottle that is used if they even look like they’re getting any ideas about messing with the tree/lights…

So far, so good. I’ve only seen 2 broken ornaments and the gold sequin tree skirt (it’s actually the sweetheart table tablecloth from our wedding) is only sometimes askew. Maybe our babies are just growing up! Most likely, though, keeping the spray bottle pointed at the tree through the night is helping to stop Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dumb from acting out…

Another Blumer Birthday!

Just two weeks and two days after my husband’s birthday, comes MINE (Joel is two years, two weeks, and two days older than me)! Since turning 28 isn’t as big of a deal as turning 30, I recycled Joel’s balloons instead of getting my own with the correct numbers… You get the idea though: TODAY’S MY BIRTHDAY!!!!

I have a tendency to make way too big of a deal out of my birthday (I went to New Orleans last year and had this party the year before), and this year is no different. We’re heading to sunny Florida for the weekend, which is perfect timing because it’s supposed to snow in PGH on Saturday. BYEEEEE.

While we’re on the subject of birthdays, I guess I should wish a very happy one to my Uncle David, Nikki Minaj, and my very own twin sister, Bessie. Hope y’all have birthdays for the books!
